Neyyattinkara Police arrested a man for allegedly assaulting his 14-year-old daughter, who later attempted to die by suicide following repeated physical abuse. The apprehended is Prabodh Chandran, a native of Arangamugal. The girl was admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital after the incident and was discharged.
According to police, Prabodh, a habitual drinker, had been assaulting his wife and daughter for nearly one and a half years and would often force them out of the house in the middle of the night. He allegedly assaulted the girl again on Saturday, prompting her suicide attempt.
Prabodh attacked her on Friday as well, hitting her on her left ear and kicking her lower abdomen. In October, he had punched her on the lips, causing a wound, and assaulted his wife by punching her in the eye.
A police officer told Onmanorama that the family had previously informed the station about the assaults but had not filed a formal complaint. “They asked us to send him to a de-addiction centre for counselling. He attacks the family under the influence of alcohol,” the officer said.
Police arrested Prabodh Chandran under The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 — Sections 296(b), 118(1), 115(2), and 351(2) and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 — Section 75.
