The Indian government on Wednesday banned popular gaming app PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile and 117 others for its apparent links with China.
In view of emergent threats, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, invoking its power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act, has decided to block 118 mobile apps engaged in activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, a statement read.
The Ministry had recieved seveal reports about apps stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorized manner to servers located outside India. The compilations of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to natural security and defence of India is a matter of very deep and immediate concern and requires emergency measures, the statement detailed.
This move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users, and ensure safety, security and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace, officials informed.
The development comes in wake of China's fresh attempt to change the status quo in the south bank of Pangong lake in eastern Ladakh in complete disregard of the many dialogues that the two countries has been engaged in to see peace restored to the region.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is an online multiplayer battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole. Tencent, a Chinese multinational technology conglomerate holding company, is the game's publisher.
PUBG Mobile was the second most-downloaded mobile game of 2018, with nearly 300 million downloads worldwide. The game's largest market was China, which accounted for 29% of the game's downloads, followed by India and the United States each with about 10% (30 million) of its downloads.
Interestingly, the game PUBG was also banned in China after it failed to adhere to China's content restrictions. Tencent, the game's publisher, had to alter the game significantly to make it available in the region – PUBG Mobile was the result of this and was released globally in 2018. Other countries that have banned PUBG include Nepal, Jordan, Israel and Iraq.
Earlier, on June 29, the India government had also banned video-sharing platform TikTok, UC Browser and 57 other apps amid growing tensions with China.
