Kapil's men brings the trophy home - 1983

1983 World Cup victory can be considered as the most significant achievement by India in its cricketing history.

Kapil Dev
Kapil Dev (R) famously became the first Indian captain to lift the Cricket World Cup on the 25 June 1983.

After being put to bat first in a final and setting a target of just 183 against two-time champions West Indies in the 60-over match at Lords, India would have never thought of a victory after the first innings. Windies bowlers walloped Indian batting line-up as Andy Roberts led their attack by picking three wickets for 32 runs from his 10 overs.

India never had a hope of winning this encounter, but the bowlers did the miracle for India. Madan Lal was the key man for India in their historic win as he picked up three scalps including that of the great Viv Richards.

When Mohinder Amarnath trapped last man Michael Holding leg before wicket (lbw) in the 52nd over, the Windies challenge ended. Kapil Dev's men set history as India lifted the World Cup trophy for the first time.

Beating arch-rivals in quarterfinals - 1996

After electing to bat first, India posted 288 against Pakistan. Navjot Singh Sidhu's 93 and Ajay Jadeja's quick-fire 45 from just 25 balls helped India to set a formidable target.

Pakistan started of well in the chase as Aamer Sohail (55) and Saeed Anwar (48) put on 84 runs for the opening partnership. After breaking their stand, India kept on picking wickets at the right time and sealed the match. India won the game convincingly by 39 runs.

Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble picked up three wickets each as they wrecked Pakistan's middle order. Sidhu was named as the man of the match for his gritty 93.

Dhoni step up to end 28-year drought – 2011

India lay hands on the World Cup again and for the second time at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai after 28 years. The team managed to overcome the pressure playing at home as they won the title after overcoming Sri Lanka in the final.

After a controversial toss, India put Sri Lanka to bat first. Mahela Jayawardene's unbeaten century -- 103 runs off 88 balls -- helped the Islanders to post a competitive total of 274.

In the chase, India had their worst start in the tournament, losing both the openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag within first seven overs. From their Gautam Gambhir (97) and Virat Kohli (35) carried the team with a strong 83-run stand.

Then captain MS Dhoni promoted himself to No.4 and scored a match-winning knock of 91 from just 79 balls. Dhoni's helicopter shot to score the winning run with a six against Sri Lankan medium-pacer Nuwan Kulasekara is one of the iconic moments in India's cricket lore.

Kapil Dev's brilliant unbeaten 175 took India from 17/5 to 266/8 and paved the way for their 31-run win over Zimbabwe.

After being elected to bat first, India was never in the game as they lost their first five wickets for just 17 runs in the group stage match against Zimbabwe.

Then the captain's knock came from Kapil. He absorbed the pressure and batted with tailenders. He alone scored 175 runs from just 138 ball, one of the greatest innings in the WC. He rescued India with 126-run stand with wicket-keeper Syed Kirmani for the 9th wicket and posted 266/8 on the board in the 60-over match.

While chasing, Zimbabwe failed to create good partnerships, as India picked wickets at regular intervals. Kevin Curran scored 73 runs as he alone gave a fight.

India bowled out Zimbabwe on 235 and won the game by 31 runs to seal the second position in the group behind West Indies.

Yuvraj sets up semifinal spot - 2011

An awe-inspiring century (104) from the captain Ricky Ponting helped Aussies to post a decent target of 261 after being elected to bat first. Their middle order struggled to build partnership as Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh picked up 2 wickets each.

Chasing 261, India batted very carefully against the Brett Lee-led Australian pace attack. They achieved the target in the 48th over as Sachin Tendulkar (53), Gautam Gambhir (50), Yuvraj Singh (57*) scored delightful half centuries.

India won the match by five wickets. Yuvraj was named as the Man of the match for his all-round performance.
