India were left in the difficult position of 164/5, trailing a menacing Australia by 310 runs at stumps on day two of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Melbourne on Friday. India need another 111 runs to avoid follow-on after Australia posted a first innings score of 474.
Yashawvi Jaiswal made a fluent 82 off 118 balls before being run out following a mix-up with Virat Kohli (36) while attempting a quick single. From 153/2, Indian batting collapsed, and Rishabh Pant (6) and Ravindra Jadeja (4) were at the crease at close of play.
Jaiswal and Kohli had added 102 runs and looked comfortable just like during the second innings in Perth. Meanwhile, captain Rohit Sharma's (3) dismal form continued as he got out playing a poor shot and KL Rahul got a ripper from Pat Cummins.
Earlier, resuming at 311/6, Steve Smith completed his century, while captain Pat Cummins made 49. Jasprit Bumrah (4/99) was yet again brilliant, while his pace partner Mohammed Siraj failed to impress (0/122 in 23 overs).
Smith had been unbeaten on 68 off 111 balls at stumps on day one. He took 56 deliveries in the morning to reach his 34th Test hundred to go level with Indian great Sunil Gavaskar. The five-match series is tied at 1-1, with the final Test to come at Sydney.
