New Delhi: Indian captain Shubman Gill scored his fifth Test hundred of the year before watching spinner Ravindra Jadeja dismantle the West Indies top order, putting the hosts firmly in charge of the second and final Test on Saturday.
Gill remained unbeaten on 129 as India posted a commanding 518-5 before declaring on the second day. Chasing a series sweep, the home side quickly reduced West Indies to 140-4, with left-arm spinner Jadeja taking 3-37. At stumps, Shai Hope was unbeaten on 31, with Tevin Imlach on 14.
“Even after that run out, the team is in a good position,” Jadeja said, referring to opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal for 175. “We still posted a big total, and we’ll aim to bowl them out quickly tomorrow.”
Jaiswal was denied a third Test double century after being run out for two runs on Saturday morning. Nitish Kumar Reddy added a couple of sixes but fell to Jomel Warrican. Gill brought up his 10th Test hundred and accelerated, with Dhruv Jurel contributing 44 before falling to Roston Chase, prompting India’s declaration.
West Indies’ innings began poorly, with B Sai Sudharsan taking a spectacular reflex catch at forward short leg to dismiss John Campbell for 10. Chanderpaul (34) and Alick Athanaze (41) added 66 runs, but Jadeja struck twice more, dismissing Chanderpaul and Chase, and taking a catch to end Athanaze’s promising knock.
