Twelve of the 15 Indian Olympic Association (IOA) executive committee members have moved a no-confidence motion against its president, PT Usha. The proposal will be considered at a special general meeting (SGM) on October 25.
The motion, part of a 26-point agenda, criticises Usha's functioning, including alleged non-compliance with the IOA constitution, failure to convene the Annual General Meeting, and pressuring the finance committee to approve unauthorised expenses, reported national media.
Key issues also include Usha's unilateral decisions on sponsorship deals, specifically granting Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) four extra events — the Winter Olympics (2026, 2030) and Summer Youth Olympics (2026, 2030) — without additional payment, reportedly causing a Rs 24 crore loss to the IOA, according to a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report.
Meanwhile, Usha recently stated that the executive committee was aware of the discussions with RIL, which aimed to safeguard the Rs 35 crore sponsorship rights fee payable by the company to the IOA. Usha is the first woman president of the Association.
