Kerala's Karan Thapa qualified to the men's singles main draw of the Naushad Mather Memorial National Ranking Tennis Tournament in Kochi on Monday.

Thapa defeated fellow-Keralite Arjun U 6/4, 6/1 in his third qualifying match to advance. He joined Tamil Nadu's Irfan Hussain and Karnataka's Nithilan Kinattuvilai among others in the main draw.

Meanwhile, there were a couple upsets in the first round of women's singles. Sixth seed Chandana Potugari of Andhra Pradesh was defeated by Karnataka's Sai Janvi T 6/3, 6/1. Tamil Nadu's Janaki Ramesh toppled eigth seed Rutuparna Choudhary 6/2, 6/7(8), 6/2.
