KSRTC in Kochi is offering a ride that is different from and more exciting than a bike or car ride. A ride in a KSRTC bus has a special feel whether it is over the high-ranges or through the cities. What if such a ride is in a double-decker bus? What is being talked about here is the double-decker KSRTC bus service through the heart of Kochi.

Many of us have the wish to ride an elephant. We don't do it only because we are afraid. A double-decker bus ride has an equivalent feel. This giant is in service in Kochi for the past 9 years. A ride in this bus, which is plying between Thoppumpady and Angamaly, is sure to give you a totally different perspective of the journey.

For those travelling in a double-decker for the first time, it will be an exciting experience. The highlight of the bus is the upper deck. If you sit at the front of the upper deck, it will give a feel akin to driving the bus. This will be very thrilling for the children. What is worth enjoying is the perspective from a higher level. When crossing bridges, even adults get a tingling sensation. This double-decker bus is under the Angamaly Depot. When on NH-47, the bus gives off an air of a majestic tusker. When other vehicles give way, this ‘tusker’ will come and stop for you with a royal aura.

From the history

Double-decker buses were operated in Kochi between 1969 and 1975. These buses were plying between Wellington Island and Palarivattom. This service got prematurely stopped and then it was resumed after 36 years in 2010. In Kerala, double-decker buses are operated only in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. Of the three double-decker buses in service, two are operated in Thiruvananthapuram and one in Kochi.

Between Angamaly and Thoppumpady along the national highway route, the bus halts at all stops. The ticket rates are the same as that in an 'Ordinary' bus. Standing is not allowed on the upper deck.

Those travelling to Kochi mostly do not miss out on a Metro ride. There is a connection between the double-decker bus and the Kochi Metro. On the way from Thoppumpady, the bus passes by Edappally which has a Metro rail link. So, it is possible to combine the double-decker and Metro journeys. Two birds in one shot, so to say.
