Safety tips while travelling during floods

Are you in Kerala for a vacation? If so, it is important to review your travel plans if the region you are travelling is flooded. Though floods used to be rare in Kerala, last year has been difficult for the state and with rain pouring continuously for the past few days, many places have been already flooded. But do not panic. Be alert.

Onmanorama Travel shares some important points you need to keep in mind.

1. Driving on roads that are already flooded might be more dangerous than walking. Though both are not advised, it is better if you don't drive through such damaged roads and dilapidated bridges. Also, it is better not to get trapped in you car.

2. If you have to drive and is unavoidable try not to travel at night because there is a high chance that you might miss potholes and damaged roads.

3. Try not to wade through flooded waters. It might be slippery and do watch out for snakes as the water level rises. It is always better to find a shelter at a higher ground than putting your life at risk.

4. Listen to your local radio channel or All India Radio for rain updates. Make your travel plans accordingly.

5. Report dangerous situations you come across while travelling at state roll-free helpline 1070. It might be of help to other travellers.

6. Try not to go to any places alone as it is safer to travel together. Take extra care.

7. Stay away from power lines and electric wires.

8. Charge your phones and torches as power outages could be expected any time.

Be prepared and stay safe. Consider these as safety tips and not an information for you to panic.
