Kadal kurinji paints the Vypin coast violet

Vypin: It is that time of the year when you could take a happy stroll through the sea of violet 'kadal kurinji' flowers along the Vypin coast. The recurrent rains, violent seas or the harsh weather do not deter the nature from casting its own annual festival of blossoms.

Violet flowers have already begun blooming from the kurinji plants that are thickly grown along the coast. Not just the tourists, but the people in the locality too throng the beach to enjoy the charming sight of the kadal kurinji.

The Kadal kurinji whose botanical name is ipomoea bellomia is a salt resistant plant which is seen in the coasts of Vypin since the past. However, it has only been a few years since it became a rage after the pictures of the extremely beautiful flowers appeared on the social media and on the newspapers. It is truly incredible that this plant grows abundantly in the salty soil where majority of plants or shrubs cannot thrive. The botanists have included kadal kurinji in the salt resistant category of flora that can grow roots in the beaches or along the coastal side.

Though the cattle love to chew on the fresh leaves and stem of the kadal kurinji, their presence is limited in the beach, especially under the scorching sun. This has significantly helped the plant to grow abundantly and bloom. A lush green garden with an abundance of violet hued flowers could be seen on the little dunes of sand on both sides of the beach road. Newlywed couples prefer this location for their post wedding photo shoots as the bed of violet flowers offers the most romantic backdrop. These flowers might even find its way into a song in a movie that will soon be shot in the beach. One has to take a ride or stroll through the coastal road to enjoy the beauty of kadal kurinji, also known as adambu in the local dialect, in all its grace and glory.
