Plastic-free Kumarakom now aims to turn carbon neutral

Tourist destination Kumarakom is all set to welcome the upcoming season by lowering carbon emissions and becoming more environmental friendly. After its successful 'plastic-free Kumarakom' campaign, the popular tourist centre of Kerala would now be a carbon neutral destination.
The project, which aims to turn Kumarakom into a nature-friendly destination, is executed by the Kumarakom, Aymanam and Arpookkara panchayats, responsible tourism mission, tourism department and Kerala Travel Mart.
Carbon neutral activities
The resorts would now have electromagnetic key tags to save energy, LED lamps and timely energy auditing as well.
Solar street lamps are already being installed in the walkways in the resorts. Solar water heaters are another feature. 412 solar panels that can produce up to 100 kilo watts energy have been installed in the Kumarakom Lake Song Resort.
More than 1 lakhs plants and trees would be planted in the resorts and other tourism centres. The authorities said that more trees would be planted every year.
Training classes for the resort employees about the significance of energy conservation and being carbon neutral will be held.
"The hotels and resorts in Kumarakom are taking the initiative to follow the green protocol and give importance for energy conservation. Most of them have even won many state, national and international awards for their carbon neutral activities and energy preservation," said K Arun Kumar of the Chamber of Vembanad Hotels and Resorts.
