Munnar: The temperature in Munnar nosedived to less than zero degrees last morning. Minus two degree Celsius was recorded at the Chenduvara estate, near Munnar, last morning, making it one of the coldest mornings of the season. As a result, light snow and frost were also reported in the area. The lawns at the factory division were covered in frost. Interestingly, the temperature recorded at Chenduvara on Wednesday was the lowest of the season.

The temperature dropped to 2 degree Celsius at Munnar town and Nallathanni and to one degree Celsius at Chittuvara, Kundala, Lakshmi and Devikulam Lakkad. Meanwhile, it was zero degrees at Old Devikulam. Munnar has been freezing since the beginning of December. Two weeks ago, the temperature in places like Kundala and ODK (Old Devikulam) had dropped down to zero degree.

"Areas like Pampadamshola, Vattavada received 'snow' and tourists are making a bee line to Munnar. Temperatures in certain areas here have fallen to zero degree starting January. Earlier, the coldest month used to be December, but not any more," said a local.

The popular hill station in Idukki district located around 1,600 metres above sea level have been attracting scores of domestic tourists ever since the beginning of the season. Moreover, with the airports at Kochi, Coimbatore and Madurai all lying within 110 kms to 165 kms, resort owners are expecting a brisk business.
