Eravikulam National Park closed as breeding season of Nilgiri tahr begins

Munnar: The Eravikulam National Park (ENP) Naturehas been closed to visitors for two months as the breeding season of the endangered species, Nilgiri Tahrs, has begun. The park will remain shut till April 1.

With the closure of the park, entry of travellers to Rajamala has also been prohibited from today for two months. As many as 15 kids of tahrs have been born so far in this season.

While 11 lambs were born in Kumarikkallu, Mesthirikkalu and Varayattumotta; four were born in Rajamala.

The Forest Department is planning to conduct a census of Nilgiri Tahrs in April after the procreation period ends.

Around 785 tahrs were sighted in a survey conducted in areas including Eravikulam in April last year. As many as 125 among them were kids.
