Vagamon: The Idukki district administration has banned off-road trekking in Vagamon as conflicts between the jeep drivers continued despite constant police intervention. The ban order was issued by collector Sheeba George considering the police report that the jeep drivers in the Elappara and Vagamon areas constantly clashed for taking the tourists for off-road trekking. The drivers, divided into groups, had fought four times in the last two months, injuring many people. They even attacked the police at Elappara who rushed to the spot to quell the disturbance.

The conflicts continued even after four drivers from Vagamon were arrested and remanded. A few days ago, a vehicle from Elappara carrying tourists was stopped again at Vagamon. The drivers threatened that they wouldn’t allow the jeeps that arrived from Elappara to take the tourists for off-road trekking. This incident prompted Peermade DySP Vishal Johns to hand over the damning report to the district police chief.
