Shikara boat rides banned in Alappuzha till further notice

Alappuzha: The District Collector on Wednesday banned the services of Shikara boats and other smaller boats in the various waterways of the district, including lakes and streams, till further notice. Houseboats conducting services in the district have been asked to strictly abide by the safety measures. The District Police Chief, DTPC Secretary, Deputy Director of Tourism and the LSGD Joint Director have been tasked to ensure that the order was strictly implemented. The ban on Shikara and other boat services came after Alappuzha witnessed widespread heavy rainfall in the last few days. The district recorded 100.04 mm rainfall on Tuesday alone. IMD has notified monsoon onset in Kerala in the next 24 hours. The district has witnessed flooding in low-lying areas during the heavy showers in the past few days.
