Malayali head of YouTube stands out with fresh ideas

Ajay Vidyasagar

Ajay Vidyasagar, regional director of YouTube, is in a different league altogether. He could be best described as a person with an inordinate passion to generate sublime ideas and the exceptional zeal to make those into reality. Ajay, a Keralite, will vouch for the fact that there is nothing like creating an out-of-the-world experience for the customers. He joined Google as the regional director of YouTube, Asia-Pacific, after proving his mettle by working in pre-eminent broadcasting and film production companies.

Ajay, who will be the keynote speaker at the national digital summit Manoramaonline Geojit Techspectations 2018, stands out in the crowd for the simple reason that he had lived through the drastic changes in the broadcasting sector. From the 80s and 90s when everyone huddled around a single television with rapt attention and the production company decided what the viewer should see, to the present when every other person is a content creator on different platforms. So, Ajay is part of the elite few who has a comprehensive and thorough knowledge of the Television and online video.

Ajay worked with Star TV, the flag-bearer of the broadcasting industry, for close to 14 years where he was the ‘Employer of the Year’ in 1997. As a recognition for his contributions, he was selected as the ‘Achiever of the Year’ in 2002. Ajay played a key role in airing the hugely-popular game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ in India, and making Star TV’s presence felt among the regional channels in south India. Channel V’s ‘Youth Platform’ was the brainchild of Ajay. He joined Google after quitting Sun Network as CEO in 2011.

Google never considers itself as a global power and the company, including YouTube, was only trying to make available information in a democratic way, said Ajay. YouTube always tries to face complex situations with simple solutions.

This approach is quite evident in YouTube launching offline video as it was unable to reach out to many people due to lack of proper internet penetration in India.

As head of YouTube, Ajay had to confront this question many a time: “What are the short cuts to make a video viral?” To this, his reply is that there isn’t any common factor binding the viral videos. The digital space doesn’t have the magic wand to make a hit out of a shoddy product, and the trick is to churn out superlative content which is acceptable on all platforms. A content will become viral if it is well-received in both TV and digital space, he added.

Ajay, who believes in the credo that it is great to make others feel happy, has a word of advice to be cheerful – be happy with what you have, and curb unnecessary aspirations.
