Kottayam: Candidates who have sought private registration for the MA Sociology programme at Mahatma Gandhi University were in for a shock when the results of the viva voce was published. 54 out of 74 students who attended the fourth semester exam had failed. Meanwhile, around 50 students among the failed ones could only score 35 marks. The candidates need to score at least 40 marks to pass this oral exam.

The Parallel Colleges Association, in their complaint to the Vice Chancellor, demanded an inquiry into this incident. The university authorities too confirmed that a  probe would be held to find out why such a large number of students had failed the test.

KR Ashok Kumar, General Secretary of Parallel Colleges Association, said that the results seemed suspicious when 50 students got the same marks. Meanwhile, the MA Sociology students are anguished that majority of them have failed.

The results of those who had enrolled in 2018 were published now. The course was supposed to be completed in 2020. However, it got delayed by two years. The students who failed the exam are likely to lose one more year.
