Looking for a rewarding career in Fashion Technology? Admissions open at NIFT

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), the pioneering institute of fashion education in the country, has invited applications for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for the academic year 2024-25.

Interested candidates can apply online till January 3, 2024, through the website www.nift.ac.in. The last date for online registration with a late fee of Rs 5000 is January 8. The application fee is Rs 3000. However, the candidates belonging to the Disabled and Scheduled caste categories need to pay only Rs 1500.

Candidates applying for both B DES and B F TECH programmes will have to remit Rs 4500 and Rs 2250, respectively. The admit card will be available on the website in the third week of January.

The Computer-Based Test entrance examination will be held on February 5. NIFT has 18 campuses, including those at Kannur, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Fashion Designing isn’t just restricted to the design and aesthetics of clothes and couture, but is diverse and inclusive, even effectively incorporating the possibilities of IT. The students should have drawing and sketching skills to become a successful fashion designer.

NIFT has adopted a format of Majors, Deepening Specializations, Minors, and General Electives to facilitate diversified career options for students.

Programmes

  • Bachelor of Design (B Des): Four-year programme. Courses include Fashion Design, Leather Design, Accessory Design, Textile Design, Knitwear Design, and Fashion Communication. Those who pass the plus 2 level examination can apply.
  •  Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BF Tech): The duration of the course is four years. The candidates should have passed the plus 2 level examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  •  Master of Design (M Des): Two-year course. Educational Qualification: undergraduate degree in any discipline from any recognized institute/university or undergraduate diploma of minimum three years duration from NIFT/NID. The candidates should have an understanding of the fundamentals of design. The course will not provide any basic knowledge and skill development in design as part of its curriculum.
  • Master of Fashion Management (MFM): Two-year course. Educational Qualification: undergraduate degree in any discipline from any recognized institute/university or undergraduate diploma of minimum three years duration from NIFT/NID.
  • Master of Fashion Technology (M F Tech): Two-year course. Educational Qualification: any B Tech degree or B F Tech from NIFT.

Courses offered on the Kannur campus
Fashion Design/Textile Design/Knitwear Design/Fashion Communication B Des programmes, Apparel Productions B F Tech course and the PG programmes in Fashion Studies (MFM) and Design Space (M Des).

Each course has 34 seats, besides seven additional reserved for the candidates who are residents of the state. There are three seats in each course reserved for NRI/ Foreign Nationals. In total, there are 308 seats.

Selection criteria
B Des: General Ability Test (GAT), Creative Ability Test (CAT), Situation Test
B F Tech: GAT -A, GAT -B
B Des & BF Tech: GAT -A, CAT, Situation Test
M Des: GAT, CAT, Interview
M F Tech/ MFM: GAT, Interview

The GAT will be a Computer-Based Test, while the CAT will be a written examination. In the Situation Test, candidates will be asked to apply their creative minds and form models and the like with given materials.

Other information 

There are 60 centres for the entrance test scheduled for February 5, including Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and New Delhi. The results will be announced in March. The Situation Test and Interview will be held in April and the final selection list will be published by the end of April. The seat allocation process will be done during May and June. Special conditions apply to NRI and Foreign Nationals.

There is a negative marking for the objective test. Usually, those candidates who have a thorough knowledge of the syllabus and pattern of the entrance test and undergo specialized training will get selected. 

Log on to https://www.nift.ac.in/samplequestion for model questions. It will be difficult for a candidate to pass the test based on their drawing skills alone.
