Apply for AFCAT by December 30 to earn a commission in Indian Air Force

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has invited applications for appointment to commissioned offices in flying and ground duty branches. There are a total of 317 vacancies (275 male and 42 female candidates) for the courses starting in January 2025.

In the flying branch, male and female candidates will be given a short service commission. Selection will also take place for Aeronautical Engineer, and ground duty technical in the branches of electronics / mechanical.

In-ground duty – non-technical, appointments would be carried out in the branches of weapon systems/administration, logistics, accounts, education and meteorology. Another category of candidates who are invited is the NCC special entry–flying squad.

The duration of short service commission in the flying branch is 14 years and 10 years for ground duty. The service could be extended by four years.

There are provisions to convert short service commission to permanent commission. Those in permanent commission can continue in service till they receive pension. However, pension is not available for officers in short service commission.

Test dates
Selections would be based on the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) scheduled to be conducted in online mode on February 16, 17 and 18. Applications for the test should be submitted online by 11 pm on December 30.

Candidates will be directed to appear for the test in one of the two shifts to be conducted on all three dates. 

10 per cent of the AFCAT quota in the flying branch is set apart for NCC entry. Bachelor’s degree holders in subjects other than BTech can also apply. All candidates need to have studied Maths and Physics at the Class 12 level, except those seeking admissions to administration, logistics, accounts and education.

Details on qualifications for each branch are given in the notification. Candidates should be aged 20-24 years in the flying branch and 20-26 for ground duty. They also have to be single while joining the course. The application fee is Rs 550. The pattern of the exam is explained on the websites.
