Housemaid falls from the sixth floor of Kochi flat, grievously injured

Kochi: A 55-year-old housemaid suffered grievous injuries after she fell from the sixth floor of a flat in Kochi, under mysterious circumstances.

Kumari, of Salem in Tamil Nadu, has been admitted to a private hospital with grievous head injuries. She is on ventilator support.

The incident happened at the Link Horizon flat at Marine Drive in Kochi around 8am on Saturday.

It is suspected that the accident happened when Kumari tried to slip down the balcony of the sixth floor using sarees. Two sarees were found tied together on to the balcony railings.

The police too said that the accident happened when the maid was trying to flee. The statements of flat owner advocate Imtiaz and other residents have been recorded.

However, no case had been registered over the incident even late on Saturday night.

The flat residents had informed the police and fire force in the morning that the maid had fallen on to the roof of the car porch from the apartment. The over 10-ft-tall car porch has a concrete roof.

The fire force personnel from the Ernakulam club road took her to the General Hospital. She was then shifted to the Lakeshore Hospital.

The room, where she stayed, was found to be locked from inside, central station inspector S Vijayasankar said. The police are trying to clear the mystery behind her alleged attempt to get out of the balcony using sarees.

Kumari, who had gone back to her native place following the COVID-19 lockdown, returned 10 days ago.
