Saubhagya will leave the hospital on Sunday morning to join the Oppana team in a wheelchair.

Kollam: A student who was seriously injured in an accident while riding pillion on a scooter with her father will be in the fray for the Oppana competition at the Kerala School Arts Festival, which is known popularly as the School Kalolsavam.

Saubhagya fractured her leg as the scooter driven by her father was hit by a car near Thevally at Kollam on Tuesday evening. The car sped away after knocking down the duo.

It was local residents who took them to hospital. Saubhagya, who was seriously injured, was in the ICU. After the pain subsided, it was Saubhagya who said she wanted to attend the festival.

The accident took place when she went out with her father after returning home from Oppana practice at her school. The bone in her leg snapped into two but Saubhagya will leave the hospital on Sunday morning to join the Oppana team in a wheelchair. And, if the doctor allows she will also sing for the manavatti (bride) in the event. Classmates Anjali and Asiya would sing along with her.

After the Oppana contest for the higher secondary classes gets over, Saubhagya will return to the hospital; she needs to be operated upon to insert a metal rod into her leg. That surgery has been put off for a few days so that she can take part in the contest.

Saubhagya is a student of Thevally Government Higher Secondary School.

Oppana is a song and dance performance popular among the Muslims of Malabar.
