Woman killed as sozzled husband strikes her with hammer, iron rod

Ettumanoor: In yet another gruesome incident of domestic violence, a woman was fatally struck allegedly by her husband near here. The middle-aged woman received grave injuries as she was hit by a hammer and an iron rod. The incident occurred around 10.30 pm on Sunday on the outskirts of Kottayam town.

Mary (50), wife of Tomy, of Nedumalakkunnel House in Thellakom, was the victim.

The local police have taken Tomy into custody.

On Sunday, Tomy had reached his house in an inebriated state and picked up a quarrel with Mary. As the tiff worsened, he allegedly picked up a hammer and struck his wife. When Mary fell on the ground, Tomy smashed the back of her head with an iron rod, the police said.

After ensuring that Mary was dead, Tomy informed the matter to his brother at Iritty in Kannur over phone. Tomy’s brother in Iritty subsequently called another brother living at Vedagiri, Athirampuzha in Kottayam and passed on the information.

The brothers then called the police.

A team of police officers headed by Circle Inspector T R Rajesh Kumar soon reached the scene of crime and saw Mary’s body lying in the hall of the house. The police carried out further procedures to shift the body to the mortuary of the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

According to neighbours, Tomy regularly came home drunk and quarrelled with his wife. Tomy, a construction worker, and Mary had no children.
