Kootanad, Palakkad: A 48-year-old Thrissur native, a resident of a mental healthcare centre at Thrithala in Palakkad district, died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital for spinal injuries. The deceased was identified as Siddique.

His sister Shajida had filed a police complaint that the Kunjithangal, brother of the centre's owner, had assaulted Siddique.

The police, who filed a case against Kunjithangal on February 14, said that the accused was a staff at the mental healthcare centre. The police said that a probe would be held to ascertain if the assault was the cause of the death.

Siddique's brother has also filed a complaint to the Health Minister and Human Rights Commission.

His relatives alleged that Siddique had been at the mental healthcare centre for two years. Two weeks, the staff called to inform that Siddique was not keeping well. The relatives then went to the centre and took Siddique to a private hospital in Pattambi. After treatment, Siddique was taken back to the mental healthcare centre.

A couple of days later, the relatives said they received another call from the centre. When they reached the centre, they reportedly found Siddique in a frail state, and bedridden. They immediately took him to the private hospital in Thrissur. A medical examination revealed that he had suffered injuries to his spine. The relatives demanded that a probe be held and action to be taken against the culprits. Siddique's funeral would be held on Wednesday.

However, authorities said there are hundreds of people at the mental healthcare centre and none of them is assaulted.
