#MeToo: Anu Chandra, asst director, shares her ordeal on sets

The #MeToo movement has gripped Kerala as well, and more women are coming out with revelations against prominent personalities. Actor–politician Mukesh was the first celebrity who was called out as part of the movement.

Now, filmmaker Anu Chandra is the latest to join the iconic movement by sharing an unpleasant experience which happened to her while she was working as an assistant director.

Anu’s Facebook post, in which she wrote about the incident, has created a storm on social media as well. “I was just a 20 year old when I became an assistant in movies. I was the only woman technician during that time and I continued to do a few more films as well. I remember since I was the only woman working in the technical department, I was looked down as a loose woman. They believed that an independent woman who sets out to make her own career was loose and they would feel an entitlement towards us. I have realised that even the labourers in the unit would approach you with an intention,” wrote Anu.

She revealed that an associate director of a movie in which she too had worked, had openly invited her to sleep with him. “I was shocked to realise how quickly I was turned into just a sex object from a technician. However, I didn’t show it on my face and fiercely looked at him. He just hung his head without saying a word. I stormed out of that room banging the door harshly behind me. But even two years after that incident took place, I was disturbed by his advance. I became someone who didn’t have the courage to commit another work. I hid myself for two years as fear had gripped me,” the filmmaker revealed.

Anu says that she decided to revive her career and become an assistant again as she had gained strength from experiences like these. “Now I am able to work with renewed passion and enjoy my career, as I have the courage to strongly react against any man who sets his eyes on my body. I have realised that their heads would hang in shame if we stand strong. I wouldn’t care even if my career gets jeopardised because of that,” Anu concludes her Facebook post.

At a recent press meet, actress Archana Padmini too had opened up about a harrowing incident which happened on the sets of a movie.
