HBD Ulaganayagan: When Rajini was asked to learn acting from Kamal

Rajinikanth recalls shooting for Avargal directed by K. Balachander

While Kamal Haasan turned 64 on Wednesday, his contemporary Rajinikanth reminded everyone that the former has a long way to go. “He is a great artiste who has taken Tamil cinema to the global level;” this was how Rajinikanth described him when Kamal Haasan-starrer Vishwaroopam faced protest.

Today, as celebs from all quarters are pouring out wishes for the legendary actor who is fondly known as Ulaganayagan, we take a look at what Rajinikanth had said about Kamal at the 50-year celebration of the latter's acting career.

“In 1977, I was shooting for K. Balachander's movie 'Avargal'. After shooting for my segment, it was Kamal's turn. Considering that as a break time, I immediately went out for a smoke. Our director KB sir saw me and he then got angry.

He later then asked for me and I went to him asking him if he needed anything. He, then told me to not to waste my time and rather watch Kamal’s acting so that I can improve my acting. And after that I never left the spot when Kamal was performing,” Rajinikanth said.

Further he added, “There was a time when stars from other industries like Mohanlal, Venkatesh, Chiranjeevi, Amitabh Bachchan were all in awe of me. Probably they wanted to know how did I manage to be an actor when the industry already had a star like Kamal Haasan.”

Though rivals of their time, the rare friendship of Rajini and Kamal is cherished by fans of both the stars. The duo has done 13 films together. Interestingly, Rajinikanth made his cinema debut with Kamal in the 1975 movie 'Apoorva Raagangal'.
