“When I created the story of 2.0, just like the 3D effect bringing out the best visuals, I wanted to get the best possible sound for my film,” said Shankar during the trailer launch event of '2.0' a month ago.
Experimentation is Shankar's signature for he dares to take the path least treaded. If visual effects were widely noted in Shankar's movies, in '2.0' he has gone a step higher with the technology. This time, he along with Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty and the film’s producers at Lyca Productions, has come up with a new sound technology - SRL (Shankar, Resul, Lyca) 4D for 2.0.
“While watching a movie in a theatre, you would have seen speakers on both the sides of you or even above you. But when it comes to 4D sound, you will find speakers under your seat,” is how Shankar described it.
When Shankar first expressed to bring a novel feature in sounding, Pookutty was hesitant. And it took two years of research for him to execute. Talking about the technological aspect, Pookutty said, “In a 3D visual, the background, midground and foreground can be defined. You are pulling an image from the screen thereby creating an interactive platform for the viewers. This same aspect was taken for designing the sound in this movie,” said Pookutty.
Interestingly, the sound mix of the movie is done by an Angamaly native Bibin Dev, who pointed out the implementation was the biggest challenge. “There were about 2,000 tracks, including dialogues and all of them had to be balanced. We had to explore each aspect of developing a particular sound. The position of subjects should be defined bringing the sound from all around,” he said.
In Tamil Nadu, only 2 theatres will screen this format. 2.0 is the first Indian film to be entirely shot in 3D format. The movie is gearing up for a release in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and the early morning shows will begin at 4 am on Thursday.
