5 Malayalam sports movies ahead of 'Ilayaraja', '....Kaattoorkadavu'

“I'm trying to attempt something completely new and give life to the cyclist Alice,” wrote Rajisha Vijayan sharing the first-look poster of upcoming movie 'Finals'. The movie will see Rajisha playing a cyclist preparing for Olympics. 'Finals' is produced by Maniyanpillai Raju and directed by P R Arun and joins the league of sports dramas in Malayalam.

Interestingly, this week, two Malayalam movies based on sports will be releasing -- 'Ilayaraja' directed by Madhava Ramdasan and 'Argentina Fans Kaattoorkadavu' by Midhun Manuel Thomas. While the former is based on chess, the later, as the name suggests, revolves around football.

It's very rarely that two sports movies will clash at the box office on the same day, March 22. Although such movies do happen once in a while, the spirit and enthusiasm such films and their character evoke are enduring.

Let's take a look at a few of them:

Captain (2018)

The film, which is based on the real life of footballer VP Sathyan, fetched Jayasurya the Kerala state best actor award. The movie was a biopic which traced the rise and fall of a football player from Kerala. For Sathyan, everything is secondary including his wife. Set on a serious tone, 'Captain' shed light on a man who only knew playing the game. Credits to the film for making us familiar with a person like him.

Sudani from Nigeria (2018)

Northern Kerala is well known for its football mania. The film, in fact, talks about the unique sporting culture of one such football playing club. Although the plot dwells on humanity, compassion and care, the basic thread remains within the game. In the exclusive Onmanorama decoding a scene series, its director Zakariya revealed that the biggest challenge he faced while making the movie was the climax football match sequence where he had to get the correct crowd sequences along with artists playing on the ground. And we remind you that it was for this movie that Soubin Shahir shared the best actor award with Jayasurya.

Karinkunnam 6s (2016)

×

The film saw Manju Warrier as a volleyball coach, who tries to bring together a team consisting of prison inmates. They are all set to play an important match against professional teams in their bid to prove their calibre in any way possible. There's everything right from foul plays, troubled coach, lively matches and the pressure of course!

1983 (2014)

A movie that brought cricket and nostalgia together is what '1983' is all about. “Is there any girl who doen't know Sachin Tendulkar,” goes a dialogue in the movie and you get the feel that cricket is the most popular sport indeed. While many have a notion that sports is a waste of time, the film focused on what sports could mean to a person other than mere leisure.

Speed Track (2007)

Though made as a commercial entertainer, the movie had all elements of being a sports drama. The movie starring Dileep in lead is about his craze for athletics and the spirit to win against all odds is well presented.
