Shweta Menon elected as AMMA’s first female vice president

Actress Shweta Menon was elected the first female vice president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Shweta has been an executive member of the association for the last three years. Meanwhile, the actress told media persons that she has never contested in an election before and that she is happy to have contested this one.

Maniyanpillai Raju too had won the election for the post of vice president. However, Asha Sharath who contested from the official panel lost. 14 candidates had contested to the 11 – member executive committee. Honey Rose and Nivin Pauly from the executive panel and independent candidate Nasser Latheef were defeated. The annual general body meeting of AMMA and the elections were held in Kochi. Earlier, Mohanlal and Edavela Baby were unilaterally elected to the posts of the President and the General Secretary respectively. Meanwhile, Sidhique is the treasurer and Jayasurya is the joint secretary.

“I feel happy that I am the first female vice president of AMMA. I have been an executive member for the last three years. We had planned to do a lot of things under the leadership of Mohanlal. However, we couldn’t do a lot of it due to the COVID-19. None of us expected that the elections would take place soon. I have never contested in an election in my life. I was really happy when they called me and asked me to contest to the post of vice president,” Shweta said.

The actress added that she didn’t expect such a huge turnout for the elections. Around 317 members of the association turned up to cast their votes. “I was excited to see that lots of women have come to vote. We have lots of surprises and plans, and those are all visions of Mohanlal. We would give warnings to those who try to spread false news about the association on social media. We have just started. We will let you know more after the forthcoming meetings,” noted the actress.

AMMA president Mohanlal said that they could extend support to many people inside and outside the association during the pandemic

“Not just the association, COVID- 19 has toppled the entire world. No one was able to enjoy happiness as our colleagues weren’t able to work and our future looked bleak. We were able to help many as we have an association like this. We distributed kits during Onam. We contacted people who were financially struggling and offered them help. Besides, we conducted vaccination drives and constructed houses and gave financial assistance too. I am glad that I could do all these by heading the association. Now, things are getting betting. Most of us have returned to work. We can do a lot more, both inside and outside the organisation. We are trying hard for that. It is not the matter of happiness or sadness, but it indeed is a blessing that we could do a lot with the support of this association,” Mohanlal said.
