When Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, the eminent lyricist, sang a few lines for the legendary actor Jagathy Sreekumar in his presence, it became a heartwarming moment of camaraderie.
This rare interaction took place during the ceremony presenting an award instituted in memory of Unnikrishnan Namboothiri, who is regarded as the grandfather figure of Malayalam cinema.
'I love calling him Jagathy Chettan. Though we are of the same age, the name feels perfect for this unparalleled talent of Malayalam cinema,' Kaithapram said affectionately about Jagathy Sreekumar. The audience was deeply moved as Jagathy, visibly delighted, tapped along to the song crooned by Kaithapram.
The award, which included a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a statuette designed by artist Unni Kaanayi, was presented by Local Self-Governments Minister MB Rajesh at a ceremony held at Jagathy Sreekumar’s residence.
Unnikrishnan Namboothiri, after whom the award is named, was the father-in-law of Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri. Sons of the late actor, Justice Kunjikrishnan and Bhavadasan, along with Jagathy Sreekumar’s son Rajkumar, MLA TI Madhusoodhanan, M. Vijin, former MLA TV Rajesh, and other trust and award committee members, were also present at the occasion.
