Controversial director Sanalkumar Sasidharan announced plans to release actor Manju Warrier-starrer 'Kayattam' online for free claiming there were concerted efforts to stop him from releasing the movie in theatres. The director who is best known for helming 'Oraalpokkam' and 'Sexy Durga', among others had previously released his Tovino-starrer 'Vazhakku' citing the same reasons.
Taking to Instagram, the director said he had to leave India for the United States of America as his life was in danger and also maintained that he was not allowed to continue making films in India. He further stated that he had a moral obligation to release 'Kayattam' since several people were involved in the project.
"I had made my film 'Kayattam' in 2019. The movie went on to receive many awards in India and abroad. However, I have not yet been able to release the film for my audience. Whenever, I tried contacting Manju Warrier, who is the producer and actor of the film, I felt someone was trying to prevent me. I realized she was at risk and that somebody was trying to control her. A false complaint was filed against me and I was arrested. However, the magistrate court released me on bail because the complaint was flimsy. After leaving jail, I realised that my life was in danger and someone was preventing me from doing movies. This is why I left India for the US," he said.
According to him, there were a lot of risks involved in making the film 'Kayattam'. "The movie was shot in the Himalayas and the actors had put their lives in danger for the filming. I believe it is my responsibility to release the film. I will publish it online for free. The link to the film will be available on various social media platforms. I know that I will face a lot of criticism for my decision, but I am willing to face the consequences. This is the second time I am taking such a 'foolish decision'. I released 'Vazhakku' for the same reasons. Please watch the film without any prejudice," he added.
