Emilia Perez star and Oscar nominee Karla Sofia Gascon is facing backlash for her offensive and defamatory X posts against the Muslim community, George Floyd and even the Oscars. The actor from the transgender community who portrayed a cartel kingpin who undergoes a gender-affirming surgery to lead a new life had previously posted some hate message on X regarding the Muslim dress code and the sizeable population of the religious group in her native Spain.
In one of the posts, which is now deleted but translated by Variety, the actor wrote: “I’m Sorry, Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.”

She also posted a photo of a Muslim couple witha  woman who is dressed in purdah. Her previous comments about the Oscars has also received a lot of criticism and may, according to a few international news outlets, including the BBC, may hinder her chances for the Best Actress Award for which she is nominated this year.

“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M,” Gascón wrote. “Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”

Meanwhile, the 52-year-old Gascon, according to People magazine, issued an apology and deactivated her X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday. In a statement to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ the same day, the Spanish actress mentioned a “campaign of hate and misinformation” and said, “I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or in the future. I am a human being who also made, makes and will make mistakes from which I will learn. I am not perfect”.
