The elections to the top leadership of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is all set to take place on August 15. The elections were necessitated after the AMMA leadership led by superstar Mohanlal resigned over the Hema Committee report. Even as 74 artists have submitted nominations to various posts in the associations, Maala Parvathi who was the IC member in AMMA, has now revealed that Mohanlal was forced to resign since Baburaj, who served as joint secretary in the previous council, failed to step down though a junior artiste had come forward with allegations of sexual abuse against him.

In an interview with Manorama News, Maala expressed her discontent regarding Baburaj's decision to run for the AMMA elections again. According to the latest nomination list, Baburaj is vying for the position of general secretary.

"Over the years, we have seen how accused persons have been removed from key posts. This has been evident in AMMA since Dileep's case came to the limelight. Vijay Babu who was also accused in a sexual assault case was asked to resign from the executive committee post. We expect Baburaj to do the same. Mohanlal had to step down since Baburaj was not willing to submit his resignation," she said.

Meanwhile, fellow artists Ansiba and Sarayu pointed out that accused actors can run in their association's elections, noting that even politicians with accusations against them have participated in national elections.
