Amid mounting opposition to his candidature for the post of General Secretary in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), actor Baburaj has announced his decision to withdraw from the race. In a social media post, the actor stated that he is stepping away from all organisational activities of AMMA permanently. He clarified that the decision was not made out of fear, but because it would become increasingly difficult to carry out responsibilities while constantly defending himself against the allegations raised against him.

The full text of Baburaj’s post is below: Respected all, I would like to inform you that I am stepping down permanently from all activities of the AMMA organisation, as I do not wish to air internal matters in public. This decision has not been made out of fear of anyone. Over the past eight years of my involvement with AMMA, all I received in return were allegations of abuse and slander. The advice I received from fellow members through (TV) channels will remain in my heart for the rest of my life.

Over the past ten months, the committee has achieved several significant initiatives. Motivated by a desire to sustain this progress, I chose to contest once again. When it was announced that Lalettan (Mohanlal) would not be part of the committee, I, too, had wished to step aside. But at the time, many colleagues came together and convinced me to stay.

Now, however, I find it extremely difficult to continue dealing with these accusations while carrying out organisational responsibilities. I could have been defeated through the electoral process, and that would have been the democratic way. However, what I am facing now is far beyond what I can endure.

I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the members who trusted and supported me unconditionally. I sincerely wish AMMA all the very best for the future, and I hope only good things happen to everyone. With love, Baburaj Jacob

Several members of AMMA, including women actors, had voiced strong opposition to Baburaj's candidature. Last year, the actor was granted anticipatory bail in a rape case.
