Producer Saji Nanthyattu, who recently resigned as general secretary of the Kerala Film Chamber, is among the candidates contesting for the president’s post in the Kerala Film Producers Association elections. Speaking to Onmanorama, the producer said that his priority, if elected president of the association, would be to reduce the number of Malayalam films being released in Kerala. “It is not about the quantity of Malayalam films.
"A large number of films are being released without proper filtering, and most fail to generate the expected revenue, often resulting in significant losses. I plan to establish a Samithi comprising industry experts who will evaluate and guide scriptwriters, ensuring that only scripts with strong potential move forward into production."
He emphasised that the Producers' Association must implement a cap on technicians' remuneration. 'Significant production losses often stem from the excessively high fees charged by technicians. There needs to be serious discussions on setting reasonable limits. This can only be achieved through strong determination and collective will.'
B Rakesh, who is the current general secretary of the association is contesting for the post of president against Saji. Sandra Thomas who is one of the lone woman voices in the producers’ association had submitted her nomination to the post of president. However, it was rejected after the association stated that she had only two films to her credit under her own banner. The bylaw mandates the candidate to have three films under their credit. Sandra had submitted an appeal to the Ernakulam sub-court, stating that she had co-produced several hits along with Vijay Babu through Friday Film House. However, the appeal was dismissed by the court on Wednesday. The Kerala Film Producers' Association will hold the elections on Thursday.
