Veteran Mollywood actor Devan has recently opened up about the sudden demise of his wife Suma in 2019. According to Devan, it was an allergy triggered by ice cream that fatally affected her lungs and claimed her life. Suma was the daughter of noted filmmaker Ramu Kariat.
“It has been only four years since my wife passed away. She had suddenly developed an allergy to ice cream. While we were in Chennai, she once experienced severe breathlessness immediately after consuming ice cream. At that time, we rushed her to the hospital and managed to save her. After the incident, doctors had strictly warned her never to eat ice cream again, regardless of the brand. He shared this revelation during an interview with The New Indian Express.
Then, one day, our daughter visited home along with her child. I was away on a shoot in Cherthala, and ice cream was bought for the children. They returned after having a meal and ice cream. After they left, Suma, perhaps forgetting the earlier warning, had some herself. Within an hour, she began to struggle to breathe. Our house help called me, saying chechi was rolling on the floor, gasping for air.
By the time I reached, her condition had worsened. We rushed her to the hospital, but we could not save her. The allergy had caused holes in her lungs, and all the air she inhaled was leaking out. It was a fatal condition,” he said. Suma passed away in July 2019 at the age of 55, leaving behind Devan and their daughter Lakshmi.
