Navya Nair seeks waiver after being fined in Australia for carrying jasmine flowers

Actor Navya Nair, who recently faced trouble with Australian authorities for carrying jasmine flowers, has formally requested a waiver from the country’s agricultural department. The incident took place at Melbourne Airport, where she was fined 980 AUD (approximately ₹1.14 lakh) for failing to declare the flowers upon arrival.
Speaking to HT City Singapore, Navya clarified that the flowers were not concealed in her handbag, but worn in her hair. “I was shocked. It’s a significant penalty. I didn’t hide the flowers; I was wearing them on my hair. But I didn’t declare them before the journey — I might have missed it. They told me that parts of plants and flowers are included in the declaration,” she explained. “The sniffer dogs caught the scent because I had kept the flowers in my bag earlier in the trip.”
Admitting that she was unaware of the specific biosecurity regulations, Navya said she has since contacted the authorities in hopes of a reconsideration. “I have 28 days to pay the fine. They informed me that I could write to the agricultural department explaining the situation. I sent the email that very night and I’m now waiting for a response,” she said.
Interestingly, the actor noted a discrepancy in the fine amount. “From what I read, the usual fine is around 300 AUD. But I was charged 980 AUD. I don’t understand why the notice mentions six units — that’s something I’m hoping they clarify.”
Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, Navya added, “As a visitor, I have to respect and follow the laws of the country. I did try to explain that it wasn’t intentional — I wasn’t trying to smuggle anything. Out of humane consideration, they could have just confiscated the flowers. But of course, it depends on the officers handling the case.”
The incident caused a delay in her airport procedures, and Navya said the experience has been a learning moment — not just for her, but for others as well. “This incident has become widely known among Malayalis. Hopefully, it serves as a reminder to be extra cautious while travelling. The laws are strict and the declaration form is small — it’s easy to miss. But the consequences are serious.”
