The 71st National Film Awards ceremony is set to take place on Tuesday evening at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Mollywood superstar Mohanlal will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award — the highest recognition in Indian cinema. The ceremony will be broadcast live on DD News and streamed on the official YouTube channel of the broadcaster, allowing audiences across the country to tune in.

President Droupadi Murmu will present the national awards in various categories to the winners for the year 2023. Though the National Film Awards are presented annually, there has been a two-year delay owing to Covid. Malayalam film actors and technicians will also be honoured at the event. Vikrant Massey and Shah Rukh Khan will take jointly take home the Best Actor awards, while Rani Mukerji will receive the award for Best Actress. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘12th Fail’ has been adjudged the Best Feature Film. Karan Johar-directed ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ will be given the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

Critically-acclaimed film ‘Ullozhukku’ directed by Christo Tomy has been adjudged Best Malayalam Film, while Urvashi will take home the award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the film. Vijayaraghavan who played a 100-year-old veteran in ‘Pookkaalam’, will take home the Best Supporting Actor. Incidentally, Midhun Murali will also receive the award for best editing for his work in the movie.

Jude Anthany Joseph’s widely praised disaster drama 2018, which depicted the Kerala floods, was honoured for Best Production Design, adding another feather to its cap. In the non-feature films category, 'Nekal – Chronicle of the Paddy Man,' directed by M K Ramadas, received a Special Mention. Meanwhile, 'Parking' was named Best Tamil Film in the regional feature film category.
