The iconic Malayalam film Summer in Bethlehem, from the celebrated Ranjith–Sibi Malayil duo, has returned to the big screen in a stunning 4K re-release. Featuring some of Mollywood’s biggest stars—including an extended cameo by Mohanlal—the film is also remembered fondly for its timeless soundtrack.

Music composer Vidyasagar recently revealed an interesting backstory about one of the film’s most beloved songs, Ethrayo Janmamayi, penned by the late Gireesh Puthencherry. According to Vidyasagar, the melody was originally composed for a Tamil film that was to be directed by Sibi Malayil.

However, the project never materialised. “We had planned to work together on a Tamil film around 1995–96, but it didn’t take off. Later, after Pranayavarnangal, when we began discussions for 'Summer in Bethlehem,' Sibi sir reminded me of that tune I had composed earlier. Interestingly, I had even reused the same tune for another Tamil project, which also got shelved. I believe the music was destined to become a Malayalam song,” Vidyasagar told Onmanorama. Reflecting on its enduring popularity, he added, “The people of Kerala love this music, and they love me. I am deeply grateful for that love.”

All the songs in Summer in Bethlehem were written by Gireesh Puthencherry, who collaborated with Vidyasagar on several iconic tracks. Together, they formed one of Mollywood’s most enduring composer–lyricist duos through the late 1990s and early 2000s. Vidyasagar also spoke fondly of Gireesh, remembering him with deep admiration.
