I was misunderstood: Shane Nigam

With so many films in his kitty, including TK Rajeev Kumar’s ‘Bermuda’, Shane Nigam couldn’t be happier. And to add to that he recently debuted as a director!

What is ‘Bermuda’?
I can intensely relate to the emotional upheavals of my character Indu Gopan in this film. It is always unfortunate to be misunderstood. The story is about the distinctiveness of Indu Gopan’s perspective. 90% of the film is filled with laughter.

It’s only towards the last 10 minutes that you will be able to figure out the reason behind that laughter. There is a sense of poignancy in that self-realization. That’s what the film is all about.

As an actor, it’s important to work with such an experienced director like Rajeev Kumar sir. I think at one point, a lot of people used to think Shane Nigam had some issues similar to how people think about Indu Gopan in this film. ‘Barmuda’ will release on August 19th.

Who is Shane Nigam?
I am the son of an artist who couldn’t survive the situation in Malayalam cinema for long. I started acting in films when I was in 9th grade.

By the time I reached college, I could play a hero in a big film. We led a very ordinary life and suddenly things were moving too fast for us. We were under the spotlight.  Movie offers started pouring in. The people I idolized became my friends. I didn’t bother to be diplomatic while talking to people. I was hugely misunderstood.

There is a cardinal rule in this industry, and they will be hostile towards anyone who breaks it. It was my fault that I learned it very late in my career. During those days only my mom was able to understand me. She is my friend and mentor.

What are your new projects?
I have directed a new film along with a few of my school friends. It is titled ‘Somewhere.’ There are four characters in the 26-minute-long short film.

Most of the crew are friends I know from school. I have done the story, screenplay, camera, and editing as well. Najeeb has helped with the story. In the middle of its post-production work, I started shooting for ‘Vela’ at Palakkad.

I play a cop for the first time. I am also doing a film called ‘RDX’ produced by Sophia Paul, directed by Nahas (his first film). I am also excited to play a hero in a Priyadarshan film.
