Actor Nassar, who is known for playing prominent characters in South Indian films, is all praise for Malayalam scriptwriters. Comparing the industry with Kollywood, the actor-cum-director says Mollywood still has scriptwriters, which is lacking in the Tamil industry.
“Malayalam industry still has writers, while Tamil does not. A scriptwriter knows which actor would be able to pull off a certain role. So, when I am approached for a role in Mollywood, I know the makers are calling me for a reason,” he says.
According to him, there are no big or small roles in Malayalam cinema. “Every role in Malayalam films is significant, that’s what is special about this industry,” Nassar said during the promotion of his upcoming webseries ‘The Jengaburu Curse’, which will premiere on SonyLiv on August 9.
He is also full of praise for legendary Malayalam filmmakers like late Bharathan. “Though I have worked with many prominent directors, I consider Bharathan as a great filmmaker. I believe filmmakers like him made greater films than what are being made today — especially, the way they made films on complex man-woman relationships,” says the veteran actor who has worked with Bharathan in films like ‘Thevar Magan’ and ‘Aavarampoo’.
The much-respected actor admits he does very less Malayalam films because most often his dates clash with those given for Telugu movies. “I learned good cinema by watching Malayalam actors. I am always willing to do Malayalam films. However, I am unable to commit to many Malayalam films since most often my dates clash with Telugu film schedules. I am always happy to do any role in Mollywood,” he signs off.
