Malayali audiences continue to deeply miss the presence of late actor Innocent, who passed away in 2023. Now, as his grandson Innocent Junior, fondly known as Innu, prepares for his long-awaited film debut, memories of the legendary actor return with renewed warmth and emotion.

Carrying not just his grandfather’s iconic name but also his passion for cinema, Innocent Junior is stepping into films with a heart full of gratitude and memories. In a special interview with Manorama News, the youngster spoke movingly about his bond with his grandfather—one that shaped his life and his dreams.

‘Proud to be his grandson’
It was Innocent himself who named his grandson Innocent Junior. Proud of the name and the affection it brings, Innu says it has been his biggest blessing. “People hold me close and ask, ‘Aren’t you Innocent’s grandchild?’ the moment I say my name. That love means everything to me,” he said. At home, his grandfather lovingly called him Innu, a nickname that still echoes in his heart.

Recalling Innocent’s unforgettable performances, Innu says Warrier from Devasuram is his favourite role, while Ponjikkara from Kalyanaraman remains his all-time best comedy character. “Those performances are lessons in acting for me,” he added.

The moment that sealed their bond
One of the most emotional memories Innu shared was a near-death experience that forever strengthened his bond with his grandfather. While staying in a flat in Ernakulam, a small incident turned terrifying. As a child, Innu fell into a half-open manhole while playing. It was Innocent who immediately jumped in without hesitation and rescued him.

“I held on to his leg the moment I saw him. He saved my life,” Innu recalled, choking up. “Later at the hospital, I heard him tell my father, ‘God didn’t bring me to this world to make me an actor, but to save Innu.’ If not for him, I wouldn’t be sitting here today.” Innu firmly believes that his grandfather’s presence still guides him.

Seeking Sathyan Anthikad's blessings
The New Year has marked a turning point in Innocent Junior’s life, as he is all set to act in two films—fulfilling a dream his grandfather held close to his heart. Veteran director Sathyan Anthikad once called Innocent regarding a role meant for his granddaughter Anna. Though that project didn’t materialise, it planted a seed.

“My grandfather always wished to see me act. I had told him many times that I loved cinema,” says Innu. “It hurts that he isn’t here to watch my debut. More than anything, I miss his jokes, his stories from the sets, and our friendly banter.”

Before stepping into films, Innu sought the blessings of Innocent’s closest friends—Sathyan Anthikad, Priyadarshan and Dileep—as well as Akhil and Anoop Sathyan. His grandmother Alice too is happy and supportive of his new journey.
