Megastar Mammootty, currently garnering pan-Indian attention for his diverse roles in Malayalam cinema, is collaborating for the fourth time with acclaimed director Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The duo, who previously joined forces in award-winning films such as ‘Vidheyan’, ‘Anantaram’, and ‘Mathilukal’, are reuniting after a 30-year hiatus for ‘Padayatra’. This new project promises to once again showcase Mammootty’s exceptional acting talent.
In an interview with Onmanorama, Adoor revealed that Mammootty will portray an exceptionally positive character in ‘Padayatra’. “Mammootty and I share a long professional history. We first collaborated in 1987 with ‘Anantharam’, followed by ‘Mathilukal’ and ‘Vidheyan’. He is the only actor I have worked with four times, and I believe his adaptability and willingness to break away from his established image are what make him a remarkable actor. Mammootty is also someone who places his trust in the director once he understands the character he is to play, embracing the director’s vision completely. This quality sets him apart,” Adoor said. While further details remain undisclosed, it is rumored that Mammootty will play a Gandhian doctor in the upcoming film.
“Mammootty’s role in Padayatra is distinct from the characters in my previous films,” Adoor Gopalakrishnan said. When asked if Mammootty has changed his style over the decades, Adoor quickly responded: “Everyone changes with time. I am not the same Adoor you saw 30 years ago. I’m 86-years-old now. Mammootty, too, has undergone a natural evolution. After working on my films, he went on to star in hundreds of others. With each project, he’s absorbed the growth that comes with experience and exposure. Today, he’s a seasoned actor, a true veteran. Both of us carry a wealth of experience, but he remains a delight to work with.”
Adoor fondly recalled Mammootty’s willingness to break away from his established image. “In my films, particularly Vidheyan, he moved beyond the romantic hero stereotype. He’s always been that kind of actor, and that’s why he’s excelled in his craft,” Adoor added.
The 40-day shoot of ‘Padayatra’ wrapped up recently, with the team filming in various locations across Kerala, including Ernakulam, Pooyamkutty, and Thiruvananthapuram. The script was co-written by novelist K. V. Mohan Kumar and Adoor, while Mammootty Kampany is producing the film. Actors Grace Antony and Indrans also play pivotal roles.
