'Padakkalam' review: This fantasy thriller is entertaining if you keep logic at bay

What happens when your mind is under the control of a dangerous villain? Sounds like the plot for a superhero fiction? 'Padakkalam', a fantasy film starring Suraj Venjaramoodu, tells the story of a bunch of college kids, who are diehard fans of the superheroes Green Lantern and Batman, but find themselves in trouble when a 'cool' college professor Ranjith (Sharafudheen) decides to do things his way.
Though most of the situations may seem bizarre, debutant director Manu Swaraj packs the film smartly, using the bizarre situations to elicit fun and laughter.
At the outset, 'Padakkalam' may appear to be a fun rom-com where a shy engineering aspirant Jithin (Sandeep Pradeep) is on the verge of a breakup with his girlfriend (Neerajana Anoop), but it promises to be much more.
'Padakkalam' also blends in supernatural themes like the Ouija board situation in 'Romancham', though here there are no ghosts and the film opts to explore black magic instead.
The college students, including Sandeep Pradeep, Saaf Boi, and Arun Pradeep, take the spotlight, though Sharafudheen and Suraj Venjaramoodu's characters are central to the plot. While all the actors play their parts convincingly, Sandeep truly impresses.
The music by Rajesh Murugesan is perfect for the film, blending aesthetics with contemporary elements to elevate several sequences. Nithin Raj's editing is also crucial. Overall, the film can be enjoyed if you are ready to ignore logic and soak up the new experience it offers.
