Singer and composer Sunil Koshy's new number 'Ae Watan' perhaps will be more than just a song to Indians. Its hard to let go of the patriotism be it in movies, books or music. Our mother land has witnessed diplomatic tensions , fought long wars and has given birth to brave soldiers. In the wake of tension that gripped India after the Pulwama attack, the capture of IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman by Pakistan and his release later, comes a song wherein the love for the land is the rhythm and the tribute to the soldiers its beat!
Onmanorama caught up with Sunil Koshy.
The concept
"Something in me kept telling me to make a small song which could express our feelings. This happened when Abhinandan was held captive and the atmosphere was tense everywhere. It was that helplessness which made me realise again how much our soldiers go through, which we are oblivious of, or just realise for a while when we watch news or read something on the web," said Sunil.
The creation
"The thought of creating a song suddenly came to me when I was going to bed, and I wanted it to be done as quickly as possible. I immediately made a scratch tune, and sent it to the lyricist. I was travelling to Mumbai the next day early morning for a workshop and some other recordings. The news everywhere was about Abhinandan's capture and all spoke eagerly about his release and prayed so fervently. Even in the airport and on the plane, we overheard people discussing this," recalled Sunil.
As soon as Sunil landed in Mumbai, he had finalised on the tune and directly went to noted singer Hariharan’s Studio (In The Mix Studios) at Powai and recorded the song in less than half an hour.
The execution
The song was recorded, mixed and mastered by Saibu Simon, chief engineer at In The Mix Studios. A day later, they shot a simple video inside the same studio.
The lyrics are by Sahil Sultanpuri and music is programmed by Rijosh. The song has already garnered attention on YouTube and is applauded for the feel it evokes. "Kar Chale..HumFida..Jaano Tan..Zindabad" is how the song goes gelling well with the orchestration in the backdrop.
"I'm happy that the song has been received well. Music definitely has the power, like nothing else, to move people", he added.
