Vani Jairam was sad Kerala never honoured her with a state award: Gopi Sundar

Gopi Sundar says Vaniamma, as he fondly calls her, was someone who was very friendly and easy to work with.

Award-winning music composer Gopi Sundar, who collaborated with veteran playback singer Vani Jairam in 'Pulimurugan' and '1983', said the singer was a mother figure to him.

“She would call and check how I was doing. One day, I remember, she just opened up about how she felt a bit sad that Kerala never gave her a state award. I'm sure that thought bothered her for a long,” said the music composer from Dubai.

Vaniamma, as she was fondly called, was very friendly and easy to work with. “She would come for the recording and complete singing in just one take. This trait is a rarity these days and I felt blessed by the experience. It was amazing to learn from her,” said Gopi Sundar.

He added that she would always improvise on the songs. “However, the end result would be so many times better than what we had intended,” he said.

Vani Jairam, who returned to Mollywood with movies like '1983', sang the hit song “Olanajali Kuruvi” for which Gopi Sundar won the National Award for best music direction (background score). She later collaborated with him for '"Manathe Marikurumbe" in 'Puli Murugan. She later sang “Pookkal Panineer Pookkal', composed by Jerry Amaldev, for 'Action Hero Biju'.
