American singer Grady Long, who left Malayali audiences spellbound with his rendition of the timeless classic ‘Aayiram Kannumayi’ on a television programme, recently passed away following a cardiac arrest. He was 47. Grady, who was married to Haripad native Suja, was introduced to Malayalam and its evergreen melodies through her, eventually developing a deep affection for the language and its music.

Grady had often spoken about how he fell in love with the song ‘Aayiram Kannumayi’ the very first time he heard it, a connection so profound that he chose to perform the song on stage that memorable day. His rendition moved audiences instantly, but perhaps no one was more astonished than the song’s original composer Jerry Amaldev himself. Taking the microphone after the performance, the music composer expressed his amazement at how Grady, an American with no roots in Malayalam, had managed to sing the song with such emotion and remarkably precise pronunciation.

Now, more than a decade later, the composer remembers that moment with deep awe and affection in the wake of Grady’s untimely death.

“We remained close friends over the years. Whenever he came to Kerala, he stayed in Ernakulam and we would spend time discussing cinema and music. He had always hoped to become part of Malayalam films, not just as a singer, but even as an actor. His death comes as a terrible shock. He was such a healthy person; no one expected something like a heart attack,” Amaldev said.

“What endeared him to me most was his nature. He was a genuinely good man, never pretentious, never someone trying to impress influential people. He was humble and always treated me with immense respect as a composer. He truly wanted to contribute more to Malayalam music, but perhaps many only saw him through the lens of novelty, the foreigner who sang Malayalam so painstakingly well. Beyond that sensationalism, there was a sincere artist.”

Years later, after his onstage performance, music composer Mejo Joseph introduced him to the world of cinema through the film ‘Varikkuzhiyile Kolapathakam.’ Mejo recalled his emotional connection with Grady, describing his voice as ‘fiery and powerful, like the roar of a lion’.

“I first met him when C/O Saira Banu director Antony Sony and I visited Suja for an official discussion related to the film. I had loved Grady’s version of ‘Aayiram Kannumayi’ but had not thought about it after till I met him in person. In fact, I was surprised that I met him years after hearing him sing during that programme. We started jamming together soon after and gradually became close friends,” Mejo said.

“At that time, I was working on Varikkuzhiyile Kolapathakam, and I told the director that I had found the perfect voice for the title track. The only concern was whether he would be able to handle the difficult Malayalam lyrics and pronunciation. But Suja helped him immensely. After three or four days of practice, we went ahead with the recording of Ajayya Shakthi.”

Mejo still vividly remembers Grady’s dedication that day. “He fasted before the recording because he wanted to give his absolute best. We began around 11 in the morning. I still remember the energy in the studio, including Grady’s children singing. It was such a warm and memorable experience. He shared a beautiful brotherhood with all of us.”

Grady later lent his voice to the English portions of the title track of ‘Innu Muthal' recording remotely from the United States. “I am deeply shocked hearing the news of his passing,” Mejo added. “I had recently begun work on an international project, and though I hadn’t yet told him, there was a space in it that I had imagined for his voice. It pains me that I will never be able to use it now. Someone who felt like a brother has gone too soon. That is life. I pray for his soul.”

Though Grady did not associate with many films as he had hoped, he would often sing popular songs from Malayalam and share it on his social media handles. His tribute to actor Salim Kumar from the movie 'Katha Parayumbol' through the song ‘Vethyasthanamoru Barberam..’, had gone viral.

For Malayalam cinema, Grady Long, who also acted in Harisree Ashokan’s directorial project ‘An International Love Story’, remained a rare phenomenon, becoming the first American singer to render an entire Malayalam film song with such sincerity and command. Except for a few syllables, listeners often forgot they were hearing someone for whom Malayalam was not a mother tongue. What stayed with people was not merely the surprise of a foreigner singing Malayalam, but the unmistakable honesty and love with which he embraced the language and its music.
