Annual Bengaluru cake show showcases intriguing designs

The 44th annual cake show in Bengaluru organised by the National Consumer Fair, is attracting thousands of visitors. One of the showstoppers of the exhibition is a giant cake modelled after the Red Fort, which is eight ft wide and 12 ft high.

Other highlights included cakes shaped like insects, sewing machine, penguins on snow, fairy and Buddha which take cake art to a whole new level.

''The cakes on display are edible but are made with perishable materials. The ingredients include Rice Krispies Treat, sugar dough, marshmallows and food colours,'' says Manish Gaur, director of Institute of Baking and Cake Art, Bengaluru. Gaur and his team spent months conceptualising and designing the cakes.

''It is a massive challenge. However, we look forward to it every year. Creating larger than life installations from baking ingredients is an enriching experience, which allows you to learn a lot about the role of different ingredients and also about the interplay between them,'' he says.

A wedding cake made by C Ramachandran, a 73-year-old veteran cake artist, is also a real head-turner.

The show at St Joseph's Indian School Ground, near U B City in Bengaluru is on till January 1.
