The unique taste and cultural heritage of the iconic ‘Kunjyagalam’ mangoes will soon become part of many Kerala hamlets. A project named ‘Ormakalude manthoppu’ (the mango orchard of memories) was recently set up at Nadakavu in Thrikaripur panchayat on July 22, World Mango Day to celebrate the mango species.
The ‘Kunjyagalam’ mango variety is unique to the Kunjimangalam village in Kannur. The project is designed by the Post Graduate section of the Botany department at the Payyannur College and Kanjyangalam mango unit.
Small orchards of Kunjyangalam and other varieties of mangoes would be grown in public spaces of Kannur and Kasargod districts, as part of the project.
This region is also known for many other unique varieties of mangoes, like the Vadakkedath Pancharamanga, Pattarat Pancharamanga, Thrikai Valia Kadukachi, Thrikai Kunji Kadukachi, Allakattu Bharanikadukachi, Allakattu Manjen, Madapura Puliyan, Palakeel Puliyan, Allakadan Kappakay, Manjappanasan, and Kuliyan mango. Besides these local varieties, the ‘Bombaykaran’ variety of mango too has been attracting attention here.
The authorities aim to plant various kinds of mango trees on the roadsides and village paths in the area as well.
