Biting into a crunchy, spicy pappadavada, a very common traditional snack in Kerala, can bring a Malayali a flood of memories on rainy evenings.

The humble pappadavada was part of many people’s childhoods as an affordable, fun snack that temptingly beckoned them from wayside shops, as children walked home splashing rain water puddles, after school. Even after growing up, it would have lifted their moods alongside tea, during short breaks between long drives along little coffee shops.

What about munching on the crispy treat as a monsoon bite? Here’s the easy recipe.

Ingredients
1 packet big papad
1/2 cup rice powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp cumin
2 tsp sesame seeds
1 pinch of salt
Water
Oil as required

Preparation
Mix the rice, turmeric and chilli powders with cumin, sesame seeds and water in a loose consistency
Dip a papad in the mix
Ensure the masala holds on well to the papad
Heat the oil and fry the papad on both sides
Store in air-tight containers
