Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan, who has been jailed since August 2023 in the Al Qadir Trust corruption case, has been suffering from a serious eye condition since October last year. According to reports, he was diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a blockage in a small blood vessel that carries blood away from the retina, which can eventually result in vision damage. Khan, who is also a former cricketer, suffers from the condition in his right eye. A medical team recently visited him at the jail and conducted a two-hour examination of the affected eye, and they are expected to submit a report soon.

According to experts, there is no treatment in place to unblock a vein undergoing occlusion. That said, complications can be managed with medicines, alongside treatments to protect eyesight. There are two types of occlusion. While one is CRVO, which affects the main retinal vein, as in Imran Khan's case, the second is Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO), which occurs in smaller veins. According to the Cleveland Clinic, this is more common.

What causes the condition?
1) Pressure in the eye
2) Dark spots or lines in the field of vision
3) Vision loss or blurry vision
4) Blood clots
5) Slow blood flow
6) Pressure on the vein at the junction where it crosses with the retinal artery

Who can it affect?
The patient's age is the biggest risk factor for occlusion. It can affect those over 40. It is diagnosed through a retinal imaging test or an eye exam.
How to prevent retinal occlusion?
1) Quit smoking
2) Be at a healthy weight
3) Exercise daily
4) Ensure your diet supports heart and blood vessel health.
